Tommy is 8, and has Autism. He can't talk very much, and needs assistance playing. He spends hours lining up toys, and rearranging shelves. He doesn't notice when people enter the room. He pulls away when hugged or touched. However, Tommy has a friend. Angela works with him 10 hours week. Carefully, she enters his world. Gently, she motivates him to play, to laugh, and to interact. 10 hours a week, she is there for him. Tommy has only a few words that he can speak. One of them is Angela. For her, this is the greatest reward she can receive.
Jacob is 10 and has a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. He knows high school level math, every capital in the world, and how to build a lawn mower. Though brilliant and inquisitive, Jacob has trouble making friends. His lack of ability to read social cues, or interpret facial expressions can make him struggle in school and limit his extracurricular activities. Then Jacob met Roger. Roger, a skilled autism care provider, knew how to interact on Jacob's level. Roger comes to Jacob's home and spends hours making model cars and looking at world atlases. Having a friend makes Jacob feel better about himself. Overtime, Roger began to invite other children to join in his play date with Jacob. Secure with Roger there, Jacob is now able to reach out to and enjoy friends his own age. Jacob still has lots of play dates, but only some of them are with Roger now!
